My goal in designing the "Ostritch" bag was to create an interesting visual and tactile texture using a juxtaposition of natural and man made; feathers and roofing shingles.
I first sketched out the general shape for the purse on newspaper, creating the cutting pattern. The vinyl "feathers" were hand cut and sewn onto main pieces in rows with decorative stitching.
Another hobby of mine is to find new uses for discarded items, as it lends intrigue to my designs, and keeps something from going to waste. This fruitcake tin provides a perfectly ironic splash to the holidays, containing daily necessities instead of the ill-famed "leftover" fruitcake.
To resolve design issues such as bearing weight on the delicate sides of the tin, I used large washers under the drill holes for the handle, which spread the weight and prohibit the handle knots from pulling through the tin (see picture above).
